- Global Cloud Infrastructure & Edge Hosting: Maintaining 99.9% uptime, sub-second page loads, and static pre-rendering across multiple continents requires high-availability cloud servers, database clusters, and global CDN caching.
- Continuous Editorial & Regulatory Maintenance: Keeping every single question aligned with changing DUO, IND, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs regulations requires hundreds of hours of engineering and pedagogical oversight.
The Voluntary Donation Experiment: What We Learned from €0,- in Contributions
In our earlier platform iterations, we placed tasteful, voluntary donation buttons ("Buy us a coffee / Support PolderPass") on the dashboard and completion screens, hoping that community generosity would help defray monthly infrastructure costs.
The result of this experiment was unequivocal: over months of operation serving thousands of candidates, total donations amounted to exactly € 0,-.
We do not hold this against our users in the slightest. On the contrary, it taught us a crucial lesson about empathy: couples undergoing the MVV procedure are already stretching every euro to afford plane tickets, visa fees, and legalizations. Asking candidates who are already financially burdened to make voluntary donations is simply unrealistic.
Good intentions and voluntary tips do not pay server bills or API tokens. To keep PolderPass thriving, updated, and completely free for years to come, we needed a sustainable, business-grounded solution that did not burden candidates.

We evaluated three potential avenues to achieve long-term financial sustainability:
- Option A: The Freemium Paywall (REJECTED): Locking half the questions or the mock exam simulator behind a €19/month subscription. We rejected this immediately because it violates our core mission and punishes couples with fewer financial resources.
- Option B: Invasive Display Advertising (REJECTED): Cluttering the clean consular interface with flashing banner ads, tracking cookies, and popups. We rejected this because intrusive ads destroy concentration and compromise candidate dignity.
- Option C: Ethical, Value-Add Partnerships (CHOSEN): Partnering with reputable educational platforms whose services genuinely accelerate candidate success, without adding any cost to the student.
