Where and How to Take the Dutch A1 Exam in Turkey
For applicants preparing for a family reunification (MVV) visa from Turkey, the Civic Integration Exam Abroad (Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland) can only be taken at two official Dutch diplomatic missions:
- Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands - Ankara: (Hilal Mahallesi, Hollanda Caddesi No: 5, Çankaya / Ankara)
- Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands - Istanbul: (İstiklal Caddesi No: 197, Beyoğlu / Istanbul)
There are no other authorized test centers or external vendors in Turkey. Appointments are not booked through VFS Global, but directly through the official Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NetherlandsWorldwide) appointment system.
Step-by-Step Registration & Booking Workflow
Step 1: DUO Online Application & Exam Fee Payment (€ 150)
- Before scheduling an appointment at the embassy, candidates must register and pay the examination fee with the Education Executive Agency (DUO) in the Netherlands.
- Typically, your sponsor (partner) living in the Netherlands fills out the digital form at inburgeren.nl.
- The exam fee of € 150 is paid instantly via iDEAL / Wero using a Dutch bank account.
- Once payment is cleared, DUO sends an official confirmation email containing the candidate's unique Candidate Number (Kandidaatnummer).
Step 2: Scheduling Your Embassy Appointment
- Once you receive the DUO candidate number, navigate to the NetherlandsWorldwide Appointment Portal and select your preferred location (Ankara Embassy or Istanbul Consulate General).
- Enter your DUO candidate number, full name exactly as spelled in your passport, and valid passport number.
- Because examination slots in Turkey can book out 4 to 6 weeks in advance (especially in spring and summer) - schedule your exam well before your target MVV filing date.
Mandatory Documents on Exam Day
At the consular security gate, you must present the following original documents:
- Original Valid Biometric Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond the exam date.
- DUO Payment Confirmation & Candidate Number Letter: A clear physical printout of the DUO confirmation email.
- Embassy Appointment Confirmation: The barcoded booking confirmation receipt.
- Passport Photos: 2 recent passport photographs meeting strict Schengen visa specifications.
The Exam Day Experience in Ankara and Istanbul
Security Protocol & Arrival
- Arrive at the mission entrance at least 20 minutes before your scheduled slot. Late arrivals are strictly turned away, and the € 150 examination fee is forfeited.
- All electronic items (smartphones, smartwatches, wireless headphones, flash drives), as well as handbags and coats, must be stored in secure lockers.
- Only your passport and locker key are permitted inside the examination room; pens, blank paper, and dictionaries are prohibited.
The Exam Booth & Equipment
- Testing takes place inside a private, soundproof exam booth equipped with a dedicated computer terminal, monitor, and calibrated headset with microphone.
- The consular test administrator verifies your identity, logs you into the FACET testing system, and helps you adjust your headset volume.
- The test software interface is in Dutch; instructions on screen guide you through each module.
Module Sequence
- KNS (Knowledge of Dutch Society): 30 questions. Listen to the Dutch audio, look at the photo on screen, and click Option A or Option B.
- Reading (Leesvaardigheid): 19 multiple-choice questions based on everyday texts, timetables, and short letters.
- Speaking (Spreekvaardigheid): 10 open questions + 12 sentence completions (Aanvulzinnen). Listen to each prompt, wait for the 880Hz electronic beep, and speak clearly into the microphone.
When Are Exam Results Released?
- Audio recordings and test responses are automatically transmitted to DUO's assessment center in the Netherlands immediately after test completion.
- DUO's statutory evaluation window is up to 8 weeks, but candidates in Turkey typically receive their results by email within 2 to 4 weeks.
- Passing all three modules earns you the official DUO Integration Certificate (Uitslagbrief), which is valid for exactly 12 months for your IND MVV visa application.
High-Impact Tips for Turkish Candidates
- Focus on Clarity Over Accent: Raters do not expect a native Dutch accent. They evaluate whether your vowels are distinguishable (man vs. maan) and whether your verb is correctly positioned.
- Never Speak Before the Beep: Speaking while the 880Hz tone sounds cuts off your first words and scores zero points. Always wait for complete silence before talking.
- Practice with Full Embassy Simulators: Take at least 3 full-length mock exams on PolderPass to master the countdown timers and build speaking confidence before your test day in Ankara or Istanbul.
